The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and is mandatory for any business that wants to import goods into India or export goods and services out of India. Without an IEC, customs authorities will not clear your shipments and banks will not process foreign trade transactions. Getting an IEC is a one-time process โ it has no expiry and no annual renewal fee.
Who needs an IEC code?
An IEC is required for: any person or business importing goods into India, any business exporting goods from India, service exporters who want to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy (like SEIS โ Service Exports from India Scheme), and businesses receiving foreign remittances for services. You do NOT need an IEC if you are exporting/importing goods for personal use (not for trade), or if you are a government department or notified charity.
How to apply for IEC online
IEC registration is done online through the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in). You need to create an account, fill in your business details, upload documents, pay 500 (government fee), and submit. The IEC is typically issued within 1โ2 working days after successful submission. The IEC is linked to your PAN, so a single PAN can have only one IEC. Once issued, the IEC is valid for a lifetime and does not need to be renewed annually (though it needs annual update filing on the DGFT portal to remain active).
